a quilt for Emm’s baby

untitled-5307

This past weekend I went to a baby shower for my friend Emily. Emm and I have been friends since our freshman year of college. She transferred to another school in our sophomore year, so we only lived close that one year (17 years ago!)…but our friendship stuck. :)

Emm is a VERY cool cat. Since graduating from college, she’s taken courses in Arabic (for fun!) and beer appreciation. And she brews her own beer in her garage. She’s been a carpenter, both as a hobby and as a job, for many years and has helped me out of many a jam with her handy-woman skills. Emm is a also a business woman! She owns her own electrolysis business. A few years ago Emm got married and I made a bazillion cookies that she and her husband gave out as favors at the wedding. And now…she’s expecting!

Emm is perhaps, one of the most unexpected, break-the-mold, gals I know with her beer brewing and Arabic classes. But this tidbit about Emm always makes me chuckle. Her favorite color, my friends, is pink. PINK! And, as she is having a baby girl, this shower was all about PINK! :)

I knew I wanted to make Emm’s baby a quilt…and I knew I wanted to include pink…but I also wanted something a little edgy and unexpected and modern looking. I found this pattern in one of my favorite quilting books and it seemed perfect for what I wanted to do. :)

So, last week, while the boys were home, I got up in the wee hours of the morning to work on this quilt and it came together so beautifully. I am really, really happy with it. :)

This quilt only has a small section that was actually pieced…the section with the little bits of pink. Most the work on this quilt was about the actual quilting. I was so nervous about getting all of those lines straight…but it ended up not being nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be.

Congratulations again and again, Emm. I so so very happy for you and Rob.

(and a small shout out to my willing and happy models that stepped in for the quilt’s photo shoot! Great job boys!)

About robyn

I stopped teaching Kindergarten in 2005 to become the mom of two crazy boys here in Brooklyn. At first I thought being a stay at home mom meant that I needed to pour all my time and energy directly into my sons, but I realized somewhere along the way that being a rockstar mom meant not only taking good care of my boys, but also taking good care of myself. And taking good care of myself means pursuing something creative...just about everyday. I started Made In Brooklyn to motivate myself in my creative goals as well as share my work with others and perhaps inspire them in their own creative journeys.

The quilt is just beautiful, and from your description of your friend….matches her personalty to a “t”. I love the little splashes of pink…and hooray for you to spend your time, talents, thoughts and love on such a beautiful creation. Thanks to your “babies” for sharing it too. Lucky Emm.

  2. I’m not sure what I love more – your boys modeling the quilt or the quilt itself. LOVE it! And I clicked over to the link for that book and I think I need to own it myself…

I’m sure Emm LOVES this quilt, Robyn. Well done, my friend! Well done!

Your models stole the show!!! But it did give an idea of the size (larger than I would have thought) of this beauty!! Em is truly blessed (in so many ways).
